Grant Wiggins to Exhibit in Arizona Biennial '09

Artist's fourth consecutive Arizona Biennial

May 1, 2009: Artist Grant Wiggins will exhibit a painting at Arizona Biennial '09, to be held at Tucson Art Museum in Tucson, Ariz., from July 11 - September 26, 2009.

For Wiggins, participating in this year's Arizona Biennial has added meaning: This is the fourth straight time in which he will exhibit in the statewide juried exhibition, which displays fewer than 10 percent of works submitted.

  • In Arizona Biennial '03, Wiggins's painting To Rinse Away the Tiny Particles was selected by guest curator Toby Kamps, now director of the Institute for Contemporary Art in Portland, Maine.
  • In Arizona Biennial '05, his Synthetic Landscape was selected by Siri Engberg, curator at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis.
  • In Arizona Biennial '07, Dianne Perry Vanderlip, the founding Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Denver Art Museum, voted in his minimalist painting FF0000uturo (pronounced FYOO-tur-o).
  • This year, juror Tim Rodgers, chief curator at the New Mexico Museum of Art, selected Open System, shown below.

According to the Tucson Museum of Art, the exhibition achieves two purposes: "Not only does this exhibition highlight some of the most innovative art created in this state, but it showcases the subtle shifts in imagery, stylistic impulses, and conceptual foundations to reveal how Arizona’s artistic community participates in the broad dialogue of contemporary art."
